FAQ

Chimney questions, answered

How often should my chimney be cleaned?

The National Fire Protection Association recommends an inspection every year and a sweep whenever creosote reaches 1/8 inch. For most Chicago homes that burn wood regularly, that means once a year — ideally in late summer or early fall before heating season.

How long does a chimney sweep take?

A standard sweep and Level 1 inspection takes about 60–90 minutes. Multi-flue chimneys or heavy creosote can take longer.

Will it be messy?

No. We use drop cloths, a sealed HEPA vacuum system and shoe covers. Your home should look exactly as it did when we arrived.

Do you offer real-estate chimney inspections?

Yes. We perform Level 2 inspections with a full video camera scan and provide a written report suitable for buyers, sellers and agents.

Do you clean gas fireplace flues?

Yes. Gas appliances still produce byproducts and can have blockages from nests or debris, so they should be inspected yearly too.

Which areas do you serve?

We serve all of Chicago plus nearby suburbs including Evanston and Oak Park. See our service areas page for details.

Are you insured?

Yes. Ask us for a certificate of insurance when you book — we're happy to send it over.
